    Jonas was born into a family steeped in resilience and hard work in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. He was the younger of two sons of Irvin and Mary Honick. His father served valiantly as a sergeant in World War II, participating in pivotal battles and the liberation of a concentration camp, later returning to run a local clothing store. His mother contributed to the war effort and worked until retirement, instilling in Jonas a strong sense of duty and perseverance.

     

    Excelling in academics and sports at Valley High School, Jonas was deeply influenced by his coaches, which sparked his dual passion for teaching and coaching. He furthered his education at Choate Rosemary Hall, where he not only excelled but also received the prestigious David T. Layman Award.

     

    Academic and Athletic Pursuits at Harvard

     

    Jonas's educational journey continued at Harvard University, where he majored in American History. Influential mentors during his junior year helped solidify his desire to teach. As a basketball player, he distinguished himself, leading his first-year team in scoring and playing varsity under the tutelage of legends like Tom "Satch" Sanders and Mike Jarvis.

    Post-graduation, Jonas began his career at Choate Rosemary Hall, working under History Department Chair Tom Generous. His early years were marked by significant success, including a near-perfect season coaching the varsity basketball team.

     

    Decades at The Branson School

     

    In 1980, Jonas and his wife, Donna Mezias, moved to Northern California. While Donna attended Stanford Law School, Jonas took up a pivotal role at The Branson School in Ross. His tenure there was transformative, making a lasting impact on the school's culture and success, particularly in basketball, leading the team to numerous championships.

     

    Jonas and Donna are parents to Rachael and Isaiah, both of whom have excelled in their academic and athletic pursuits, following in their father's footsteps.
